Difference Between Open Loop Stepper Motor and Closed Loop Stepper Motor

Open Loop Stepper Motor

  • Operation Principle: An open loop stepper motor converts electrical pulse signals into corresponding angular or linear displacements. Each pulse signal results in the rotor turning a specific angle.
  • Control Mode: The control mode is straightforward and simple. The motor moves precisely according to the input pulses without requiring feedback.
    • Simplicity: The control system is simple and cost-effective as it does not need feedback devices like encoders.
    • No Feedback: The system operates without feedback, meaning it does not correct itself if it misses a step or encounters resistance.
    • Design: The SIMTACH open loop stepper motor features a carbon brush-free design, optimized rotor and stator core, and high-quality bearings, enhancing performance and longevity.
    • Applications: Suitable for applications where precision is not critical or where the load is consistent and predictable.
    • Characteristic :
    • Suggest max speed 600rpm.Under the high speed, the torque of the stepper motor is greatly reduced.
    • Low speed resonance zone is around 100rpm and 200rpm
    • 4 wiring in parallel , 8 wiring in parallel or series
    • Available match with brake or gearbox according different applications
    •

Closed Loop Stepper Motor

  • Operation Principle: A closed loop stepper motor system incorporates feedback to monitor and adjust the motor’s position. It uses sensors, such as encoders, to provide real-time feedback on the motor’s position.
  • Control Mode: The control system continuously compares the motor’s actual position with the desired position, adjusting the input signals to correct any discrepancies.
  • Characteristics:
    • Feedback: Utilizes feedback mechanisms to ensure accurate positioning and adjust for any errors or missed steps.
    • Accuracy: Higher accuracy and reliability, as the system can correct itself if deviations occur.
    • Efficiency: Can operate more efficiently by adjusting the current based on the load, reducing power consumption and heat generation.
    • Design: SIMTACH closed loop stepper motor with incremental encoder ,resolution is 4000pulse/rev to make more stable precision.
    • Applications: Ideal for applications requiring high precision, dynamic response, and varying loads.
    • Characteristic :
    • l  Greater torque at high speed than open loop stepper motor

l  Low heating , and no loss of step

l  Match with Pulse control ,EtherCAT,RS485 and potentiometer speed adjustment drive

l  Available match with brake or gearbox according different applications

Summary

  • Open Loop Stepper Motor:
    • Control: No feedback, straightforward control.
    • Accuracy: Dependent on consistent load and precise pulse input.
    • Complexity: Simpler, less costly.
    • Reliability: May miss steps under varying load or resistance.
  • Closed Loop Stepper Motor:
    • Control: Feedback-based, self-correcting.
    • Accuracy: High precision due to real-time adjustments.
    • Complexity: More complex and expensive due to additional sensors and control systems.
    • Reliability: More reliable under varying loads and conditions.
